In our efforts to understand what is anxiety we have conducted a good amount of research. In our research we have come across the term anxiety DSM IV on various occasions. At the beginning we ignored the term and moved on to study what we thought were better things to concentrate on and would enable us to understand anxiety much better.
The more research we do the more we came across anxiety DSM IV. Therefore we decided that we should stop and take a look at this term. Discovering what DSM IV was enlightening to us, but it was not the structure and content that made us decide that we should communicate our findings. It was the usage of DSM IV that made us realize something very important in the way sufferers should tackle anxiety to be able to overcome it.
Let us first have a glimpse at what is anxiety DSM IV. We will first dissect the term to understand its components. What does DSM stand for? DSM stands for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. “IV” means that this is the fourth revision of this document or manual.
DSM is a manual or a guide that is mainly used in the United States and in varying degrees around the world. It is published by the American Psychiatric Association, and provides diagnostic criteria for mental disorders.
Now we are getting close the central point on why we are discussing anxiety DSM IV. The People who normally use such a guide are usually clinicians, researchers, health insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, psychiatric drug regulation agencies and policy makers.
Therefore, in general it is mental health professionals who use DSM when working with patients in order to better understand their illness and potential treatment. In addition it helps third party payer such as insurance companies understand the needs of the patients.
This means that the professionals who understand anxiety still need to consult with such a document to make sure of their conclusions and be able to better help sufferers of this disorder.
What does that tell us? We can read as much as we can, we can educate ourselves as much as we possibly can. We can have doubts and thoughts about what could be going wrong with us or our loved ones, but we should never attempt to diagnose ourselves or our loved ones and start acting on it.
There are so many people that start a journey into the recovery of anxiety just because they have read a couple of books and found that the symptoms they are experiencing are the same as the ones they read about. They start getting into all kinds of natural medicine, herbs, yoga and other sort of things thinking that they are on the right way of recovering from anxiety. The problem here is that how do they know for sure that they do have anxiety? How would they know for sure which type of anxiety they are suffering from?
To be able to answer all those questions you will need the help of professionals. Accordingly, you can have doubts in diagnosing the symptoms that you are experiencing. But for a proper diagnosis a person will need to seek professional help and then decide with the help of professionals on the recovery path.
At this point and after the proper diagnosis have been conducted and sufferer knows exactly what he/she is suffering from, then sufferers can go on an educate themselves about the type of anxiety they are suffering from. They can even venture into supporting paths of recover other than what has been prescribed by the doctors, on the condition that the support paths are all natural ways and have nothing to do with medication and with the consultation of their doctors.
This way through our own reading and support recovery methods, we can speed up the path of recovery since we are sure what we are recovering from in the first place.
